As I continue to get back into the groove of everyday life, I find myself again reevaluating the relationships that I have and the kind of energy that I want to be exposed to on a daily basis. I can imagine that it isn’t just me that feels this way every now and then…and after investing so much time into a relationship–whether it’s with a spouse, family member, or friend, it’s disheartening to think that it ultimately may not have been what you thought. It definitely isn’t something easy to do, but I truly believe that removing negative energy and relationships from your life is one of the crucial ways to promote healthy living. I’ve even stopped talking to family members because of this–people focusing on the negative aspects of every situation. It’ll be the first time they lay eyes on you in years and the first words that escape their lips spit fire and create pain–“You lost so much weight…you skinny eh!” or “Gal… you get fat!” or “Did you hear about (so and so)” or whatever other nonsense they try to share. I personally, refuse to engage any longer.

More recently, I’ve been struggling with a long term friendship that I believed to be genuine, but I now find myself questioning. It’s hard to admit as an adult that another person can create pain by disappointing you, but I am slowly learning that this is a natural aspect of growth and self-development. Disappointments are inevitable, but how you respond to them is what’s important! I’m choosing to focus on the positive relationships in my life and invest in those who fight to support and invest in me!

  1. Well said. It always seems to be the hardest thing is cutting out a family member. I’ve started looking at this rationally. Relationships and friends atre people I have chosen to bring into my life. If that goes bad I can take the blame for my choices and correct it. Family however I never chose I was simply born into it. There are no expectations of getting along with these people except in movies and T.V. I’ve had to cut my mother out of my life for the last 2 years. I can honestly say it was the best thing I’ve done. I do not appreciate though when friends push and say you need to talk to her. No I don’t. Thank you for the post.

    1. I know this is extremely delayed, but thank you so much for your comment! As I get older I see myself removing more and more–and I’m 100% okay with that! I’m sure you have your reasons for removing your mother from your life and as long as that decision has brought you greater happiness, that’s all that matters! Have a good one!

I so agree. Our local foodies group started getting negative and I had to me comment that were here to share food. Not bash on new places, because that’s what a soft opening is so they can get better. Idk something about negative people drain mee lol

I recently learned my Lupus antibodies have subsided… now just dealing with the medication side effects and disability from long years of Lupus..

      2. Well that’s amazing news! So glad to hear it! Are you still in need of the medication even if your antibodies are down? Often times, the side effects go away because your body becomes so used to the medication following long term use. Wishing you the best!<3

      3. Hi, just picked up your message. I’ve been away from blogging recently. Your question is so pertinent… the rheumatologist tells me that I need to keep taking the medication due to the dangers to my major organs should the antibodies return.
        Best,
        xx

  7. I went through something similar last year and the disappointment I felt at the direction our friendship had taken was almost greater than the pain I felt when breaking it off. I think I’m a happier and more secure person now that I’ve curated my relationships to include only the people who support and love me for who I am. I hope you feel the same way! I’m excited to join you on the rest of your journey. 🙂

  9. Yeah, I can understand how difficult that realization is. I think it’s definitely hard to break free from a relationship that seems to have substance (when reality it’s one-sided).

  10. So true. Disappointment will come and how we deal with it is key to our future success in all that we do. Wish I could help people realize this sooner rather than later. I have children and therefore I squirm when they don’t understand..until it’s too late.

    1. You know, I’m starting see more and more that sometimes it takes it to be “too late” in a situation for us to learn as well. Some learn from others and their experiences, but some of us need to be a bit more uncomfortable for it to soak in…it’s unfortunate. Thanks so much for reading and taking the time to comment!!

And so true…ridding ourselves of negative energy is necessary for spiritual growth, but it’s so hard though. In the long run however, we feel so much lighter!

  13. I weeded back a lot of my friends list when I started my path and I had another purge about four years ago. It does seem to come hand in hand with inner growth and the realisation there is more to conversation than ‘the latest fad’. It isn’t selfish, it’s probably best for all concerned when paths are so far apart. Wishing you a wonderful day! 🌞

  14. I’m like you in that I can’t be around people that breed constant negativity. Unfortunately, this is one of the reasons I fell out of touch with my best friend from high school.

It can actually be physically exhausting to deal with that regularly. Glad you’re taking care of yourself, but I understand it is hard to have to distance yourself.

    🙂
